Spiritual Leaders 2020
Spiritual Leaders is a one-year, part-time program for people in various positions of leadership, spiritual formation and outreach ministries. Those involved in an approved pastoral ministry placement – priests/ministers, lay ecclesial ministers, chaplains, educators, community leaders etc – will especially find the program of benefit. There is generally a limit of ten participants.
The program focuses on personal integration of the theory and practice of a discerning approach to pastoral ministry. Using a contemplative, experiential approach to learning, the program incorporates individual and peer group supervision, written and oral verbatims, and seminar work. It focuses on growth in self-awareness and sensitivity to the movement of God’s Spirit in oneself, as well as in the person(s) to whom one is ministering.
The program content includes: the leadership exercised by Jesus, Christian prayer and mysticism, spiritual practices in world religions, the nature and source of interior movements, discernment of spirits and contemplative decision-making.
Attendance is generally one half day per week – Friday mornings, 9.30am-12.30pm. Individual supervision is held on Friday afternoons on a rotating basis, that is, approximately once per month depending on the number of participants in the Program. Participants must also attend two Residential Prayer Weekends.
Spiritual Leaders can be credited for 30 points (two units) toward the Diploma in Theology, the Bachelor of Theology or the Bachelor of Ministry. Each of these courses of study may be undertaken at Yarra Theological Union, which is a College of the University of Divinity. Fee-Help is available to qualifying students when studying for any of these awards.
Applications for Spiritual Leaders 2020 can be made beyond the closing date as two places are still available in the 2020 Program.

Testimonials / Comments from Former Participants
The Spiritual Leaders program was one of the best things I have ever done. The depth with which we explored the course content, especially the verbatims & discernment processes, helped to deepen & affirm my own spiritual practices and hone my ability as a group facilitator of holistic meditation programs. The supervisors were quite awesome in their “soul mining” skills & abilities, and while at times very challenging, hauled up many treasures. This led, quite unexpectedly, to a deep personal healing along the way, which gave me a greater level of trust and confidence in myself, in God, and in the unfolding of life & love. It was a great honour to share this journey with spiritual companions who have been inspiring, courageous, accepting, compassionate and encouraging. A truly life changing experience for which I am deeply grateful.” – Marilyn VIC
The experience that I acquired from the Spiritual Leaders course has had a much more effect in my life and much more value than I can express in a sentence or two, or a full page. It is however to me a lifelong experience, which starts at the beginning of the course and never comes to an end, as it becomes part of my life. God bless you and keep up the good work.” – Gabby VIC
The driver for me to engage in the Spiritual Leaders program at Heart of Life was that it would be helpful in my work, and would add two more units to my undergraduate degree in theology. But in the end these were not at all the reasons I was glad I participated! There was nothing wholly new or completely unexpected in how we together explored the way our ‘spiritual motivations’ – if I can put it that way – play out in our lives, and yet by the end of the year something quite radical had changed for me and in me. And some very deep bonds were formed with the wonderful others in this fabulous group.” – Richard VIC
